The guest artist for this year is Jake Shulman-Ment.

Jake Shulman-Ment Jake Shulman-Ment
Violinist Jake Shulman-Ment is among the leaders of a new generation of Klezmer and Eastern European folk music performers. His versatility as a violinist, composer, improvisor, teacher, and folk music researcher has established him as one of the world's leading practitioners of the klezmer violin. As a child in New York, Jake's immersion in Yiddish culture and the klezmer revival movement, as well as rock, jazz, and classical music, formed him into an eclectic musician with multiple influences at work simultaneously. In an effort to explore more deeply the roots of the Jewish music he grew up with, Jake has done extensive research and study with Roma musicians in Romania and Hungary. He has synthesized his experiences and travels into an original sound, sometimes departing quite far into a realm of experimentation, but always remaining true to his deep roots in traditional Jewish music. For more information, please visit: MySpace and CD Baby

Michele Gingras, Guest Clarinetist

Michelle Gingras Michelle Gingras
Michele Gingras is Professor of Clarinet at Miami University in Ohio, where she was named Curry Distinguished Educator and Distinguished Scholar of the Graduate Faculty. Her book Clarinet Secrets—52 Performance Strategies for the Advanced Clarinetist was published by Scarecrow Press in 2004. As a classical musician, she performed on four continents and released a CD of duets with Emmy-Award winner Richard Stoltzman in 2008.

One day, around 15 years ago, a Jewish flute student stopped her in the halls of Miami U. and offered to loan her a recording of Giora Feidman, prominent Klezmer clarinetist. At that point, she knew nothing about Klezmer..She says " 15 minutes later  my life was changed forever". She fell in love with Klezmer music and proceeded to study with some of the top Klezmer musicians in the world including Hankus Netsky, New England Conservatory of Music, David Krakauer of the Klezmatics, Eileen Stahl, clarinetist for the Klezmer Conservatory Band and Josh Moss, founder of the Cincinnati Klezmer Project.

Michelethen began to perform Klezmer and has released several CDs since 1996. She performed as a klezmerclarinetist at several International Clarinet Association Conferences (including Europe), and at venues such as Indiana University, University of Denver, University of Oklahoma, Arizona State University, Cornell University, World JamFest in Cincinnati, the Berklee Performance Center, and many others. She has published many articles on Klezmer, edited klezmer music and included three sections on the subject in her book Clarinet Secrets. Her CD, "Klezmer's Greatest Hits" is available by emailing her at:gingram@muohio.edu.

Michele says her most amazing experience in playing Klezmer music occurred in her very first performance. It was seeing the smiles on peoples' faces. She was making them happy as she played and they clapped and danced!

Now, at Miami U, Michele is passing on the Klezmer tradition by teaching the genre to her pupils. Among them are Kinneret Sagee, who has gone on to play with the Toronto-based swing sextet " The Sisters of Sheynville" and teaches on the faculty of Klezkanada and Will Cicola, who has founded several bands and piblished articles about Klezmer in Interenational Clarinaet publications. They are "rising stars who will be heard from in the future".
